The First Post

The title of the blog certainly hints at it. I've set this blog up for an English project my 9th grade students will be completing. The unit is gender. Over the next few weeks my students will be investigating the following essential questions:


     » What are the expectations for men and women in society?
     » Who (what) decides the ‘right’ roles for men and women?
     » How does gender define our identity?
     » What happens when gender roles are ‘undone?’
     » How can one overcome social gender expectations?


The goal is have the students use various forms of multimedia and elements of pop culture to inform their opinions on gender roles in American culture. We will also be reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and  Borderlands by Gloria Anzaldúa. 

By the end of the unit, the students should have a better understanding of the complexities and consequences of social gender construction.
